mary pat + jonathan | frederick douglass isaac myers maritime park wedding | baltimore wedding photographer

So, it’s mid-January and I’m still waiting for a good snowstorm! The cold temperatures are still here and so I’ve been lucky enough to stay warm and busy with styled shoots, email management (keep those new inquiries coming, friends! I’m so excited for y’all!), website/workflow updating and a rebranding effort that has made the shorter days go even quicker than I’d like!

I’m continually amazed by how small a world it is and how paths cross at exactly the right time and place… Mary Pat found us while working with Courtney of Moore & Co. right after we collaborated on a styled shoot at the Accelerator Space. I’m so excited to feature one of my favorite waterfront weddings today; specifically one of my long-distance #urpcouples that travelled from Massachusetts to get married in Baltimore!!

Mary Pat grew up in the Baltimore area and wanted to marry Jonathan at a local venue that had breathtaking views of the harbor for all their guests to enjoy. As a couple that loves adventure and being outdoors together, they were planning a beautiful waterfront ceremony on the pier. Mother Nature had other plans as constant rain dashed any hopes of an outdoor ceremony that day… however, I have to say, I’ve never seen a more confident bride and a more festive getting ready suite within the Four Seasons Hotel! We persevered and had an even better first look location to capture those giddy emotions…

Without further ado, my favorite moments and expressions from their day!

Mary Pat’s grandparents’ names are on a plaque along the wall of St. Leo’s Church in Little Italy… so it was the perfect spot for a rainy day first look! Covered, romantic, diffused lighting and full of so much meaning.

Their indoor ceremony on the 3rd floor of the Frederick Douglass Isaac Myers Maritime Museum was so beautifully elegant – all organized and executed by the fabulous team of Moore & Co. Event Stylists

We had a lot of milestone firsts this year, including traveling to Italy to document Maggie + Ben’s Cinque Terre wedding in May – an amazing trip in SO. MANY. WAYS!

urban-row-photo-cinque-terre-wedding-photographer_0015We welcomed 3 times as many URP couples to the family as we did in 2016… and 2018 is right on track with record numbers, a booth at 2 bridal shows/venue open houses in January, a super exciting new brand aesthetic to be revealed, an updated and revamped bridal guide hitting mailboxes soon for our 2018 couples and lots of behind-the-scenes business education efforts being invested in…!urban-row-photo-cinque-terre-wedding-photographer_0014I can’t wait to see where 2018 takes us! I’m so crazy excited to make creative magic behind the camera at new venues and returning to established ones, with new lovebirds and recent newlyweds heading towards the first anniversary and with the help of experienced vendors and new movers and shakers in the always evolving wedding industry… CHEERS to making memories together!!!

4 new Baltimore wedding venues you need to know about…

What’s the one wedding trend I’ve seen more and more of lately and am very happy to have it stick around? Spaces full of character, texture, custom details and just the right amount of urban grit to keep it real… I’m talking about unique industrial wedding venues with a hint of sweet romance.

View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/acceleratorspacestyledshoot

Unique details. Memorable views. Natural light from expansive windows or skylights. Historic architecture (think warehouses, mills, lofts, galleries, breweries and greenhouses!). The fabric of a vibrant city.

Where are all my off-beat, industrial, boho chic loving brides and couples? If you can’t get enough of the exposed brick, mixed metal, quarried stone, worn wood/concrete floors and adaptive reuse vibe, you’re going to love these new wedding venue gems! Heck, if we could get married all over again, it would absolutely be at one of these amazing spots!

These spaces are complete blank canvases waiting to have your story and personality infused into them – whether you go the minimalist route leaving them bare and raw or dress them up for a moody, luxuriously lush feel, you really can’t go wrong!!

Church & Company’s¬†NEW venue:¬†Picker House @ Mill No. 1

This intimate event space is coming soon and is going to be breathtaking… just like the other incredible spaces the Church & Company team renovates and breathes new life into. Filled with exposed structure, stone walls and gorgeous views of the Jones Falls, this venue will have you constantly having to remind yourself that yes, you’re still in Baltimore… ūüėČ one of Charm City’s hidden gems of an event space, for sure!!

The outdoor spaces are perfect for a small ceremony in the cobblestone courtyard followed by a cocktail hour overlooking the river…

The Assembly Room

In the heart of downtown Baltimore, this large (24,000 SF!) yet flexible industrial space is currently being renovated to host weddings, intimate gatherings and innovative events. It will be available to host events starting in January 2018!

In a previous life, the space was home to the bar, Hammerjack’s. Now under new management and ownership, the space will be cleaned up and refinished, but all of the natural light pouring in from above and exposed brick walls will remain.

Working with a space of this size offers so many ways to customize your event. The building is essentially 2 large areas with separate entries off the street (great for guest arrival!) that can be divided up as necessary. You could easily have your ceremony and cocktail hour on one side and reception on the other… there are still going to be 2 bar areas, one on each side!

assembly-room-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0004

assembly-room-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0002

The photo below (left) shows the space above what would most likely be your reception. And that ‘stage’ in the right photo is the perfect ceremony spot (once repainted and cleaned up)! Think lush florals, greenery, draping… the possibilities are truly endless.

I also love that there are rooms on the upper floor that are going to be the perfect bridal suite setup – separate spaces for both the bride and groom to get ready in and not risk seeing each other, yet close enough for your photographer (heeyyyyyy!) to capture both parties easily under one roof. ūüėČ

assembly-room-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0001

While touring the space as renovations were underway, I was able to head up to the outdoor rooftop area. This space while AWESOME and huge, with great views of downtown, won’t be ready to occupy right away. It’ll eventually be another unique space to take photos and maybe even have a rooftop ceremony and cocktail hour… how many other Baltimore wedding venues offer that!?!

assembly-room-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0003

Main Street Ballroom

Almost a year ago now (WHAT?!), I had the pleasure of working with Kate, the owner of Main Street Ballroom in Ellicott City, MD at an open house for her new wedding and event space. I absolutely love that the venue celebrates open, honest and friendly policies and is inclusive to all! The space is full of rustic, industrial elegance and showcases all the charm and character that is unique to historic Ellicott City: stone foundation walls, polished concrete floors, bright and elegant barn doors, shiplap walls and large, industrial corner windows – all elements that come together to create a blank slate ready for your creative vision!

…and the neutral painted exterior walls and tucked away alley street make for gorgeous portrait locations! Recently the outdoor patio was completed with a fireplace nestled against the stream that runs alongside the building… imagine a cozy fall wedding sipping hot mulled wine outside on the patio under twinkling stars and cafe lights…

Accelerator Space

This wedding and event venue just north of the heart of Baltimore is near and dear to my heart. I live a few blocks away and am amazed at the transformation it has undergone from an old car dealership to a kitchen incubator space on the ground floor (hey, B-More Kitchen friends!) and an event space up above, aptly titled the Accelerator Space!

The ‘wild and free’ styled shoot I designed and photographed was recently featured on Baltimore Bride and I couldn’t be more proud to have worked with a dream team of vendors, including Moore & Co Event Stylists,¬†Eleven Courses Catering¬†and Blush Floral Design Studio!

View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/acceleratorspacestyledshoot

White walls, exposed structure, original wood floors, the BEST natural light and an amazing restored machinery element hanging near the main entrance to the space are just some of the gorgeous touches found in the space. The exterior patio right off of the event space is enclosed with warm ipe wood and can easily host a small ceremony and/or your cocktail hour.

View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/acceleratorspacestyledshoot

View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/acceleratorspacestyledshoot

Contemporary exterior signage and blue painted brick walls form a strong wayfinding element along the side of the building and speaking of walls, my favorite wall treatment (maybe ever?) can be found on the metal feature wall within the space – restored from a local area barn, the metal panels are SO fun as a backdrop for portraits and even more amazing in person!

View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/bmorekitchenexteriorsignage

If you love the feel of a historic space that has been transformed with modern amenities and will allow you to craft a unique vision that will leave your guests wowed and overwhelmed by how far Baltimore has come, these 4 new spaces should be added to your list of wedding venues to consider and TOUR!

*Fun fact: as a recovering architect/designer, venue tours are my favorite…* ūüėČ

Once you’ve toured them and appreciated them for yourself, I would be honored to share my creative vision with you and photograph a wedding day that is as unique as your story and relationship!

Naomi

I’ve been waiting (not very patiently I might add) to share this dream come true of a styled shoot with you and I’m so excited to finally show off the incredibly creative team that came together at the Accelerator Space! Ever since I stepped foot inside, I knew it would be an amazing space to capture – I couldn’t be more excited for all of the newly engaged couples that will find themselves getting married here!

Here’s a quick sneak peek for now… all of the details will be coming soon in future posts, with featured vendor spotlights so you can learn more about what makes these fabulous professionals so passionate about the work they do. Speaking of passionate entrepreneurs, if you like delicious food, don’t miss out on the goodness that is found just beneath the Accelerator Space: B-More Kitchen. Baltimore’s food incubator is just as inspiring! See more from my time with the chefs, here and here.

If the suspense is killing you, you might want to check out our ‘wild + free’ feature up on Baltimore Bride! ūüėČ

urban-row-photo-Baltimore-Bride-styled-shoot

The inspiration for this shoot came from the idea of contrasting the history and character of the previous life of the Accelerator Space as a car dealership/warehouse (mixed metals, glass, bold, clean lines) with a variety of lush, geometric greenery to balance the mixed metal elements and celebrate a late springtime love. Because if there’s one thing I can’t get enough of, it’s a combination of texture, greenery and soft romantic details!!

annie + chris | fells point wedding | baltimore wedding photographer

Making each other laugh is one of the most important aspects of any relationship. Not only was Annie + Chris’ wedding a celebration of their love and commitment to each other, but it was one incredible laughter filled moment after another!!

I remember hearing Annie talk about her boyfriend years back when we first met. She’d tell me how she couldn’t wait until the day he got around to proposing so she could plan their wedding and they “would just be married already!” Well, lady, it’s official. You two are officially husband and wife and a perfect match (although you do have some catching up to do in the height department, ha)!

Your vision of this day came together beautifully and we’re so honored to have been able to capture it all!!

I don’t know about you, but I’m STILL obsessed with these striped navy blue bridesmaids dresses! Annie, you have such adorable taste – all of the navy and white classic wedding details were spot on!! So stylish, fun and timeless all at the same time.

After the ceremony we captured portraits of the new Mr. + Mrs. Merrick in Otterbein and it was absolutely perfect! We found a quaint cobblestone filled alley street (like Baltimore has so many of!) and got cozy among golden hour light and love. We only had a few minutes before whisking away to the reception, but I’m so glad we made some time to capture these moments of the newlyweds – just look at how Chris looks at his new WIFE! I love it.

B-More Kitchen | industrial chic wedding venue | baltimore wedding photographer

If you’re getting married and in need of your something blue, I found it for you.¬†You can stop searching and start planning how to pose in front of B-More Kitchen’s new signage with your soon-to-be¬†spouse.

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0008
Seriously, I know for a fact that these¬†walls will be a perfect backdrop for your guests to arrive among and for your portraits to take place near, because SPOILER ALERT!… I just captured SO. MUCH. PRETTY. at a recent wedding photoshoot designed and created¬†here at the Accelerator Space by myself and Courtney of Moore & Co. Events!

I can not wait to share more (!!!), but for now, I wanted to quickly share these images that showcase the incredibly simple, yet bold and contemporary urban mural making up every exterior wall of B-More Kitchen. The blue brightens up the grayest of skies and the wood slat walls of the patio form a beautifully clean and elegant backdrop for every celebratory event.

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0010

Did I mention the bistro lights above? ūüôā Every outdoor venue¬†should be so lucky.

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0011

Inside and just below the Accelerator Space is the home of B-More Kitchen.

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0001

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0003

You may remember their launch party I photographed last Fall… it was nothing short of TASTY and such a fabulous way to kickoff their long-awaited presence in Baltimore. I ate Well-Crafted Pizza¬†slices next to the mayor, enjoyed too many¬†Bottoms Up Bagels¬†lox sandwiches¬†and stared at the 12’+ high statement-making metal panel feature wall¬†in awe. ūüôā

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0004

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0002

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0006

I look forward¬†to seeing¬†how B-More Kitchen transforms the food industry for Charm City¬†in the future… they’re already making waves by¬†transforming an old car dealership into a one-of-a-kind space for I-Do’s and improving¬†the streetscape with brighter hues.

urbanrowphoto-bmorekitchen-wedding-photographer_0007

And of course I can’t wait to celebrate with you and the entire event community as the Accelerator Space settles into its new home! Stay tuned for those styled shoot sneak peeks!! ūüėČ

barn lighting workshop | brandy hill farm | virginia wedding photographer

If there’s one thing that I knew I wanted to work on this year, it was¬†off camera flash (OCF) and lighting. Natural light is totally my jam¬†(as it is for most photographers!)… and so the technical nature of flash, lighting gear and understanding all of what goes into effectively lighting large spaces, small details and moving people is a lot to become confident in¬†without having a dark yet gorgeous place to practice and an experienced professional sharing their tried and true methods!

brandy-hill-farm-rustic-wedding-photographer_0007

So, when I learned that Michelle of Lieb Photographic was offering small group coaching on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in March, I literally cleared¬†my calendar, signed-up and booked my spot in a matter of minutes!! You may remember I took Michelle’s Summer’s End Workshop back in August at Rixey Manor and had the opportunity to photograph in a dark steakhouse restaurant as well as at a southern blooms inspired shoot.

This one day workshop focused on all types of off-camera flash scenarios (using a softbox, shoot-through umbrellas, multiple speedlight setups and more) and provided so many real-life challenges within a dark space that had high ceilings and a variety of ambient light: cafe twinkle lights, bright windows and up-lighting against the walls.

I love this shot below because it shows what really went on behind the scenes! Isn’t it funny how you’d have no idea in the shot above, that multiple lights and stands were just out of the frame and helped in achieving¬†the balanced lighting in that gorgeous backlit table setup?

brandy-hill-farm-lighting-workshop_0001

We spent lots of time with the cake and the bouquet in very differently lit setups.¬†It was so hard to stare at these beauties for so long! ūüėČ

Next, it was time to shoot all of the typical wedding day details (paper goods, jewelry, flowers…), in the DARK… er, I mean, the barn. If you would have asked me to do that previously, I would have grabbed the details and ran outside (remember that natural light obsession?!). Now?¬†It was time for a challenge…

And then there was our model, Ana.
…hello gorgeous!!!

bridal-portrait-brandy-hill-wedding-photographer_0011

We learned best practices for placement of OCF in relation to where we were and where our subject was; and I have to say, I’m such a fan of the way the¬†artifical light highlights her natural features and washes her in a soft, creamy light with so much depth and shadow. If I’m being honest, this used to intimidate¬†me like you wouldn’t believe!

bridal-portrait-brandy-hill-wedding-photographer_0010

At the end of the day¬†we went outside in Culpeper, VA near St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church to indulge all of our need for some vitamin D. ūüôā

I hope those of you who are in need of a off-camera lighting refresher, reach out to Michelle – she’s an amazing teacher, mentor and friend!

stay bright,

wedding day firsts | baltimore wedding photographer

You know what I hope for all of my brides? That the wedding planning process is going more smoothly than this month’s weather has been acting… what is up with mother nature?! This morning I¬†woke up to snow falling steadily outside as it stuck to the ground for a few hours before melting quickly as temperatures rose to the 50s by 4pm.

While gearing up for our final coordination meeting this week for our first wedding of the year, I wanted to take a breath and invite you to relive some of my favorite ‘first’ moments from last year (and some from the year before)… I’m pretty sure they’ll be just what you need, if you’re in the mood to smile! ūüôā

how to make a floral crown (and have fun while doing it!) | everyday rose events | wedding inspiration

If you’re considering making flower crowns for your bridesmaids and/or flower girls to wear on your wedding day,¬†you’ve come to the right place…

diy-floral-crown-baltimore-flower-workshop_0015

diy-floral-crown-baltimore-flower-workshop_0016

The flower crown making at our workshop at Bird in Hand in Charles Village (Baltimore’s new cafe and bookshop in one), was ON POINT! Mallory, owner and designer at¬†Everyday Rose Events, led the Galentine’s group and broke it down into extremely manageable steps. ūüôā

But first, a little history…

flower-crowns-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0004

Besides being beautiful accessories for special occasions, did you know flower crowns are full of tradition and meaning? They have been a symbol of love, fertility and celebration throughout history and around the world. They date as far back as ancient Greece where they were worn to honor the Gods.

These design tips are helpful to keep in mind:

  • After measuring twine to the right length for your head, cover twine in foliage. Secure to twine with floral tape or wire.

diy-flower-crowns-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0008

  • Cut flowers leaving 2-3 inches of the stem.

diy-floral-crown-baltimore-flower-workshop_0014

diy-flower-crowns-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0007

  • Secure flowers with wire, remember to leave the end of the wire facing out so it doesn‚Äôt poke you in the head!

diy-flower-crowns-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0009

  • Decide if you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical crown.

floral-crown-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0018

  • Spray final product with water – flowers will still soak up water through the petals/leaves.

flower-crowns-baltimore-wedding-photographer_0005I think my favorite tip that Mallory shared was to take a break if you get frustrated and sip some ros√©… you may actually like your friend’s crown better than yours, at first. Workshops are great for¬†that – inspiration, creativity and education all in one place! After a few sips of wine, all is right in the world of beautiful blooms and headpiece accessories! ūüôā

6 tips for timeless getting ready wedding day photos

The most stunning getting ready photos are full of incredibly emotional moments that often have had a lot more thought go into them than you may realize… after 5 years of capturing¬†weddings,¬†the question I get asked the most is¬†related to how much time to allow for these photos. While answering that question with¬†a number is helpful (approximately 3 hours +/- before the ceremony is when I like to arrive at your getting ready location, FYI), there’s so much more to it than just a portion of time!

Here are some critical¬†lessons I’ve learned, in the hopes that it’ll help with your planning and create a seamless and relaxing getting ready experience!

  1. Location, location, location… there’s no such thing as too much natural light!!!

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/jordyntimwedding062516
Spacious rooms are great, but if I had to choose between a large space and one with many large¬†windows, it would definitely be the latter. Of course, spacious AND¬†well-lit would be a photographer’s¬†dream, but prioritize the light and let it guide you. ūüėČ ¬†When light is coming in from various angles, it washes you in a softness that compliments everyone and gives your images that dreamy, ethereal quality.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/melissajimwedding

Bonus points if the area right against the window is clear¬†and open –¬†standing close to the light source is ideal.¬† If there are a few items to move out of the way, having your bridesmaids help relocate these¬†items would be a great thing to do before your photographer arrives!

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/ahnajaredwedding

And if you need to remove a¬†ladybug on your dress, consider it good luck. ūüôā

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/ahnajaredwedding

  2. Clean the clutter… create a¬†zone.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/keripatrickwedding080616

Time during a wedding day is precious and if we spend a good portion of our time cleaning up, it means less time for photos of you. Throw away trash; hide suitcases, boxes against a far corner or under the bed, move extra clothes and shoes into the closet. Keep things organized to allow us to capture photos quickly.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/jordyntimwedding062516

A good rule of thumb is to have your girls monitor¬†a sort of ‘bride zone’ closest to the window; this zone should remain free and clear of any stuff (which can quickly accumulate!) so that we can photograph there and bring different people in and out of the photos as you transform into the stunning bride¬†we all can’t wait to see!

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/sarajakewedding090416
    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/jordyntimwedding062516

  3. Designate a ‘holder of all the things’… everything in ONE place (generally).

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/melissajimwedding

The last thing we’d want to happen is to be missing important items¬†from all¬†your¬†bridal details! I’ve found it most helpful if you can designate one person who knows where everything is or better yet, gathers everything into one place for me to start shooting right when I arrive. The list may include some or all of these: the rings, jewelry, perfume, heirloom photos/prayer books, hairpiece, veil, shoes, garter, letters/gifts and bouquet.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/jordyntimwedding062516

If you happen to have a special hanger you’d like your dress photographed on, ask your bridesmaids to take your dress out and hang it up on the hanger¬†prior to your photographer’s arrival – steaming it (if necessary) would¬†be a great thing to do early on¬†too since a dress shot is one of the first details¬†a photographer will capture.

    jordyn-tim-s-wedding-6-25-16-getting-ready-0003

  4. Don’t forget your man… and all of his details.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/jordyntimwedding062516

Oh yeah, your groom… ¬†it may seem silly to think that you’d forget about him, but what I really mean is, his details deserve some thought too. Those are what you both may forget to plan ahead for, especially if you’re getting ready in different physical locations/buildings.¬†Be sure someone is accountable for¬†his cologne, boutonniere (and all of the guys’ flowers for that matter), ties/bowties, letters/gifts, watch and cufflinks! He may not know how to tie his bowtie and that’s ok… (that’s what The Art of Manliness is for!) and it makes for fun photos when all the guys band together to figure out how to make it happen. ūüėČ

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/sarajakewedding090416

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/sarajakewedding090416

Protip: EMPTY your pockets, gentlemen. No need for bulging, unflattering pockets.

  5. EAT, drink and be merry… you have a long, important day ahead!

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/summersendstyledshoots

Amongst all the excitement, fun and memorable moments, please don’t forget to eat and drink (mimosa, water, repeat…) while you’re getting ready!¬†The last thing we want is for you to get to your ceremony and realize you feel lightheaded¬†and haven’t eaten anything all day. Hours fly by like minutes (trust me!) – so if there are snacks and hydration available, be sure to indulge! You’ve made it this far, so I think you’ve earned at least¬†a cookie or two.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/melissajimwedding

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/ahnajaredwedding

  6. Enjoy yourself… it’s not everyday you get treated like royalty.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/sarajakewedding090416

Trust that we will capture not only gorgeous details, but candid moments as well. For timeless, authentic and classic getting ready photos, it’s important that you relax, take it all in and enjoy each element¬†as it unfolds; we will be sure to ask if we need anything from you. Put on some music (whatever makes you loosen up!), keep a sense of humor and sip some champagne…

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/ahnajaredwedding

  7. BONUS TIP! Ask your photographer for advice with timing… we’ve done this more than once. ūüėČ

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/rixey-manor

Start your day by looking out the window and taking a deep breath. On my wedding day, a hurricane was rolling in (no joke!); it was cloudy, thick and gray outside. I was in a hotel room with my sister and after tears started forming since¬†I wasn’t going to have the bright and sunny day that every bride wants, she helped me realize it didn’t matter. We were working with talented photographers that were going to capture the beauty and emotion of the day no matter what! Some things are out of your control for a reason… remember that.

    View More: http://urbanrowphoto.pass.us/summersendstyledshoots

Please use us for all of our acquired knowledge over the years! I’d highly recommend reaching out to your photographer if you have any timing concerns or specific shots/moments you want captured as you’re getting ready (looking forward to a father/daughter first look? We’ll need to build in time for that, so it’s definitely worth a mention!). They also may have suggestions based on your getting ready location, if they’ve photographed there before.
