cylburn arboretum engagement | chinnu + suganth | baltimore wedding photographer

You know when you meet someone at first and you’re not quite sure but feel like there’s something special about them you can’t put your finger on? Well, Chinnu and Suganth’s  love story starts innocently but became real with a second date at the Indiana state fair…

cylburn arboretum engagement

These two are such sweethearts, both individually and together. Their soft spoken and gentle love for each other was apparent from the second we met… I love how easy they make it all seem, especially after a first date that involved a restaurant that didn’t have any vegetarian options for Chinnu, a vegetarian (!) and a long distance relationship for some time while Chinnu attended Indiana University in 2014.

Luckily for everyone, the second date at the Indiana state fair was much more of a success; more relaxed, less formal and they were both able to be themselves!

I love how their engagement photos turned out even more special because they were dressed nicely, as opposed to just rolling out of bed during the early morning hours! Read on… for their proposal, I’ll let you hear the story directly from Chinnu herself!

cylburn arboretum engagement

“We drove to Wilmington Beach in North Carolina at the end of October 2017. We stayed at the Blockade Runner Hotel in Wilmington. We were there for a 4 day weekend. I knew we were getting engaged at some point. We had gone ring shopping and I had picked out 5 rings/styles I really liked. I did not know Suganth would propose on this trip. Also, I know he wanted to inform my parents he was going to propose, and I didn’t think that had happened yet. I found out later that he had made a secret trip to inform my parents. He did not tell his parents he was going to propose. I was excited to get away from work for a few days and have a nice time at the beach. Suganth insisted we watch the sunrise on our first morning of vacation – I was irritated. I felt like the first morning of vacation should be a lazy, sleep in kind of day. I woke up and sort of got ready. It was cold, I was in a sweat shirt and fleece pants. I planned on going back to bed once the sun came up. My grumpy mood lifted once we got to the beach, it was so peaceful and beautiful. I was glad we were watching the sunrise. We sat on a towel and watched the sunrise. Just as the sun was coming up over the horizon, Suganth got up, got on one knee and proposed. I have beautiful pictures of the sunrise and my engagement ring, but none of us because we were not dressed properly. In the evening, we dressed up and asked a random couple on the beach to take a picture of us.”

We can not wait to celebrate with you and your families at the Belvedere Hotel! And I can’t thank Jason Cheung of Lost Note Productions enough for connecting us! Friends of friends are my favorite kind of client and this time is no different… I’m honored, grateful and so excited to be a part of your day!

Cheers, lovebirds!

caren + jan | mt vernon baltimore | engagement session

I spent a perfect early summer evening with Caren + Jan in Mt. Vernon recently and it was so much fun to explore this historic Baltimore neighborhood together through their eyes! Having lived in the heart of Mt. Vernon for over 3 years, the neighborhood’s sophisticated yet classic feel was such a compliment to their relationship!

urban-row-photography-mt-vernon-engagement-baltimore-engagement_0002

Mt. Vernon holds a special place in my heart since it was the first neighborhood I ever lived in when I moved to Baltimore! 🙂 It’s home to the original Washington Monument, and some of the most exquisite architecture, churches, textured walls and ornate fences you’ve ever seen.

The Belvedere Hotel’s Owl Bar holds tons of sentimental memories of their early relationship, so naturally we had to capture golden hour magic under the iconic sign!

I absolutely love how radiant the two of them are together! Their smiles are literally contagious. 🙂

Caren and Jan, thank you for spending the evening with me among the trees and humoring me with my “wait, let’s take just one more here!” (famous last words) approach! You guys rocked it!! Can’t wait for your November wedding!

Cheers!

devan + bryce | jerusalem mill village | baltimore engagement session

If rain on your wedding day is supposed to mean good luck for your marriage…

What does it mean when it rains on your engagement session? Double the good luck AND that you have the best clients ever when they meet up with you and just say “let’s do this”! 🙂 I kept checking the forecast and crossing my fingers, but since these sweethearts came all the way from Richmond for the weekend, we didn’t have that many options for rescheduling our time together… and I’m so glad they were willing to stick with it! Just look at how rich and lush the trees were!!

urbanrowphoto-baltimore-engagement-jerusalem-mill_0002

Oh and if you’re as adorable as Devan, it means you still get your hair blown dry as if it wasn’t 98% humidity outside and you roll with it as if your sandaled feet weren’t getting full of wet grass.

urbanrowphoto-baltimore-engagement-jerusalem-mill_0001

urbanrowphoto-baltimore-engagement-jerusalem-mill_0003

Jerusalem Mill Village is one of my favorite spots to explore with couples! There are so many textures, colors, historic elements and such a wonderful balance between built and natural environments. Throw gorgeous lovebirds like these in front of all of those backdrops and I get all sorts of giddy…

urbanrowphoto-baltimore-engagement-jerusalem-mill_0004

Bryce met Devan while she was in between semesters of grad school; their relationship persevered through working 70+ hours per week while dating long distance… their connection and passion for each other is so evident, I’m pretty sure I had a smile plastered to my face the whole time we were together!

Playful giggles and lots of tickles. Isn’t that what rainy days are made for? 🙂

urbanrowphoto-baltimore-engagement-jerusalem-mill_0006

Devan even brought their own clear bubble umbrella to use… #rockstarclients.

We ended at the covered bridge at the perfect moment! A pastel sunset sky revealed itself and showed all of us how lucky rainy days truly are.

nicole + bryan | harbor east | baltimore engagement photographer

When I first met Nicole and Bryan, it was love at first conversation! Our personalities clicked as we talked about our passion for living in Baltimore, Nicole’s job as a teacher (my sister is one too!) and our love of their wedding venue, the American Visionary Art Museum.

Since these wonderful lovebirds officially becoming engaged while sailing, we had to capture their love along the water in Harbor East! We debated a few different locations, but when it came down to it, all signs pointed back to the Baltimore waterfront… and you can clearly see how comfortable and at ease they were there!

I love it when couples choose the location of their engagement photos because I know it will hold so much meaning to them and their relationship. If there’s any advice I can offer you as you’re planning your engagement session, it’s to choose a spot that relates to where you met, where you got engaged or where you spend most of your time together. It’s kind of like choosing your wedding venue – once your location is set, everything else falls magically into place! 🙂

Now let’s talk about how perfectly Nicole’s amazing hair and patterned dress blended with the tall grasses along the water and that golden hour glow… 🙂

LOVE!!! You two are seriously too cute for words.

Once changed into their casual-yet-super-cute-and-so-well-coordinated second outfits, we were off to explore the streets of Harbor East. I can’t get enough of how sweet and joyful they are together! They swore they’d never modeled before, but I’m pretty sure they’re pros.

2016: a year in review!

I love having time to reflect, review, contemplate and plan ahead. These days, those moments are few and far between with family time equally a priority, but done is better than perfect, right? 😉 I’m so excited to share with you the culmination of one of the best year’s Urban Row Photography has had yet!

None of this would have been possible without all of the incredible vendors, friends, mentors and clients I’ve met throughout the year who have helped me grow, trusted me with your memories and enabled me to share authentic stories that come from our conversations, everyday moments and sentimental details of our time together.

While it would have been nice to choose 16 of my favorite moments from 2016, that was truly impossible! So, how about my favorite 50 images from the past year instead? 🙂

main street ballroom | ellicott city wedding venue | baltimore wedding photographer

Have you ever googled ‘unique Baltimore wedding venue’?

Or maybe ‘unique Maryland wedding venue’… since you’re searching for the perfect wedding reception venue that has a combination of charm, character, amenities, flexibility, indoor/outdoor spaces and enough capacity to accommodate your large guest list?

Let me introduce you to Main Street Ballroom in Ellicott City!

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-8

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-17

Originally built in 1920 right on Main Street (hence the name, lol), if you’re planning a wedding and looking for a unique space that you can dress up to make your own, you will probably fall in love with this ‘ballroom’ pretty quickly, as I did!urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-19

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-11

I had the pleasure of photographing mini engagement sessions back in November on Small Business Saturday when Ellicott City was abuzz in a post-flood grand reopening event. It was so reassuring to see so many people out and about, supporting so many local, small businesses!

These fabulous couples spent part of their afternoon with me and were so much fun to get to know as we explored the facility on a chilly day. You can see more from my time at the ballroom, here and here!

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-15

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-5

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-14

There’s something so intimate about being in a space that is made up of so much history; solid stone walls with natural light pouring in, a clean, neutral aesthetic for you to make your own. Add some candlelight and let’s talk about the romance factor…

urbanrowphoto-mainstballroom-6

Painted brick. White barn doors. Gray board and batten interior walls. Exposed stone foundation walls. Concrete floors. A river running outside the future patio. Yes, please!

Courtney + Mike are my kind of people… dog people. 🙂 They also live in a rowhouse in Federal Hill with amazing city views and so much character.

Meet Chubs! When I showed up at their house, Courtney showed me this sign that her mom had gotten Chubs to wear during our time together. Is it not the cutest accessory?!

So much of their story (first date… surprise proposal…) started with Ryleigh’s in Federal Hill, so it was a must during our time together! I love when my couples choose to be photographed in meaningful places to their relationship; it adds a level of comfort, familiarity and fun to all of our photos. Not to mention, when standing in front of popular bars on a Sunday, you become an instant celebrity and the paparazzi effect is in full force… why not rock it, like these sweet lovebirds did?!

I love their love… fun, easygoing, hardworking and supportive; there’s nothing these two won’t do together!

she’s sassy. he’s super tall. she speaks her mind. he’s pragmatic.

Annie is a director/teacher at a Baltimore preschool and is one of the most creative, artistic and easygoing people I know. (Ask her about the chocolate bark she makes with whatever baking ingredients you have in your pantry… I’m obsessed.) We met almost 3 years ago at my daughter’s preschool (I’m telling you… engaging and educating 20+ preschool kids day in and day out takes a special type of person!); I’d always hear mention of her boyfriend and wondered who this guy was… !

I’ll never forget the day she texted me saying “it’s official!”…the story of their proposal was one filled with complete excitement, love and pure joy, surrounded by Chris’ family at his parent’s house in their backyard. Annie and Chris are such warm, family-oriented people, it was the perfect surprise proposal for Annie, who had been literally waiting for this day for years. 😉

sparkle, shine, macro filters… oh my!

At first I thought this post would mainly be helpful for fellow photographers… but really, the lessons learned are for anyone with the desire to use what they have and can afford at the time, to better their craft! 🙂 Can you tell I’m a glass half full kinda gal?

urbanrowphoto-macrofilter_0014

I’ve recently added a new lens to my gear collection and I’m SO excited for it! It’s an 85mm and an incredible portrait lens… however, it’s not what I originally thought I’d be able to buy anytime soon. I’ve always had my eye on a 100mm lens to allow me to take those dreamy closeup shots of jewelry, food, flowers and all things larger-than-life beautiful.

New gear is what gets my creative juices flowing, but it’s also what keeps me up at night since it’s so pricey! I constantly second guess myself when it comes to making smart business investments (any fellow small business owners struggle with the same anxiety?).

urbanrowphoto-macrofilter_0011

urbanrowphoto-macrofilter_0015

When I met Ines at the Summer’s End Workshop (see even more from that amazing experience here and here!!!), she shared an unbelievable tip with me… if you can’t afford to take the 100mm lens plunge now, try macro filters that cost a fraction of the cost of a macro lens. Excuse me, WHATTT. I’ve heard of these filters, but had never had the chance to try them out in a setting like this. She not only let me try hers, but shared a bunch of veteran tips on how they work (a centrally placed subject is best!), how you need to shift your camera juuuuuust so, to hit that sweet spot of incredible crispness and which filter is best for which subject type.

urbanrowphoto-blue-blush-virginia-wedding_0007

urbanrowphoto-macrofilter_0013

Consider me SOLD!!! I needed to snag these fabulous filters right away (thank you Amazon Prime!). Over the last few months I’ve used them for numerous detail shots and am happy to say, they’re life changing. Well, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but honestly, after a bit of practice and getting the hang of the nuances, I think this addition to my arsenal was money well spent if for no other reason than to allow me to save up for the 85mm AND still get those wow shots of your super sparkly jewelry and sexy wedding day heels! 😉

PS – these STUNNING Rachel Mulherin pieces below were from my recent sugar and spice inspired styled shoot at Butterbee Farm… I CAN. NOT. WAIT. to share more with y’all! Have you ever seen jewelry like this!? Unique, custom, handmade geode stones that appear to be dipped in gold and dangling from your ears. HELLOOOOO gorgeous!!! Statement pieces like this are all you and your bridesmaids need to add that extra bit of glam and sophistication. Seriously, I could find a reason / outfit to wear them all. #lifegoals

Oh, and speaking of rocks, the ice blue gemstone you see in the background of some of these shots, came from my new favorite local shop, Love That. They recently opened in Belvedere Square and have SO MANY one of a kind finds… need a housewarming present for your coworker? Check! A sweet little baby present for your neighbor? Check! A prosecco scented candle for yourself (I had no idea that was even a thing!)? Yes, please! You definitely need to add them to your #shoplocal efforts on upcoming Small Business Saturday!!!

Stay tuned… I’ll be sharing more macro images using these filters from my recent photoshoot at Bond Street Social next week! Small creative bites made for sharing – you might want to get those thanksgiving pants out and ready! 😉

keri + patrick | wyman park dell + baltimore museum of art | baltimore engagement session

Last Fall, Keri and I connected through a friend of a friend, as a result of a styled shoot I did with In A Bow Event Design! I can’t say it enough (wait a minute, now I sound like my dad…), but it really is all about who you know. So glad I know the right people! 😉

Keri and Patrick met playing trivia on opposing teams, one night at the Otto Bar just south of the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. They both have a penchant for making the other laugh; their smiles and compassionate nature are quick to put you at ease while in their presence.

They used to walk their dog in Wyman Park and love the quiet, tucked away nature of it. I did too! As we were shooting, I kept wanting to sit down and have a picnic among the big trees, dappled sun and low rock walls.

I just love the expressions Keri makes while in Patrick’s arms. And you know how I have a thing for curly hair… us curly hair girls need to stick together! 😉

urbanrowphoto-wymanpark5

This might be my favorite photo of our session… the golden light peeking through the trees, the flowers spotted throughout the grass and an adorable couple in love!

urbanrowphoto-wymanpark6

urbanrowphoto-wymanpark7

How cute are they?! Not to mention the fact that we were in a garden oasis somewhere with perfect weather. Our session occurred right after a few days of strong, rainy weather and I think Mother Nature was showing off as much greenery and lushness as she could muster!

urbanrowphoto-wymanpark9

See? Lush garden oasis, for real. 🙂

After strolling the garden, we walked over to the Newsletter Office, right at the base of the sculpture garden. It’s the sweetest little stone building, accessible by a tiny, narrow wooden walkway… perfect for a fun-loving couple! 😉

So, let’s take a quick timeout and mention the fact that the original plan had us exploring the sculpture garden just behind this building… it was open when we first arrived to location scout, I got all excited for it and then an hour later, CLOSED. Bummer!!! But, instead we explored the surrounding gates and ivy-covered walls of the BMA. I’m pretty happy with how these came out!

And I have to end on this image, another one of my favorites. Talk about classic romance… Keri + Patrick, we had a blast exploring the area together and can’t wait for your August wedding!
