cylburn arboretum engagement | chinnu + suganth | baltimore wedding photographer

You know when you meet someone at first and you’re not quite sure but feel like there’s something special about them you can’t put your finger on? Well, Chinnu and Suganth’s  love story starts innocently but became real with a second date at the Indiana state fair…

cylburn arboretum engagement

These two are such sweethearts, both individually and together. Their soft spoken and gentle love for each other was apparent from the second we met… I love how easy they make it all seem, especially after a first date that involved a restaurant that didn’t have any vegetarian options for Chinnu, a vegetarian (!) and a long distance relationship for some time while Chinnu attended Indiana University in 2014.

Luckily for everyone, the second date at the Indiana state fair was much more of a success; more relaxed, less formal and they were both able to be themselves!

I love how their engagement photos turned out even more special because they were dressed nicely, as opposed to just rolling out of bed during the early morning hours! Read on… for their proposal, I’ll let you hear the story directly from Chinnu herself!

“We drove to Wilmington Beach in North Carolina at the end of October 2017. We stayed at the Blockade Runner Hotel in Wilmington. We were there for a 4 day weekend. I knew we were getting engaged at some point. We had gone ring shopping and I had picked out 5 rings/styles I really liked. I did not know Suganth would propose on this trip. Also, I know he wanted to inform my parents he was going to propose, and I didn’t think that had happened yet. I found out later that he had made a secret trip to inform my parents. He did not tell his parents he was going to propose. I was excited to get away from work for a few days and have a nice time at the beach. Suganth insisted we watch the sunrise on our first morning of vacation – I was irritated. I felt like the first morning of vacation should be a lazy, sleep in kind of day. I woke up and sort of got ready. It was cold, I was in a sweat shirt and fleece pants. I planned on going back to bed once the sun came up. My grumpy mood lifted once we got to the beach, it was so peaceful and beautiful. I was glad we were watching the sunrise. We sat on a towel and watched the sunrise. Just as the sun was coming up over the horizon, Suganth got up, got on one knee and proposed. I have beautiful pictures of the sunrise and my engagement ring, but none of us because we were not dressed properly. In the evening, we dressed up and asked a random couple on the beach to take a picture of us.”

patterson park + fells point engagement | lauren + matt | baltimore wedding photographer

All of my couples have such personality and fun-loving stories, but I can’t get over how much Lauren and Matt have in common with each other (and with me)… making it so easy to capture their adorably sweet love for each other and where they live!

(Spoiler alert: they live one block away from where Anthony and I lived for almost 8 years… within walking distance to the Patterson Park Pagoda, so naturally we had to start there!)

I couldn’t begin to tell their story as well as they can in their own words, so without further ado… Lauren shares how their love story came to be (so many quintessential Baltimore bars/restaurants played a role in their first date! I love that!):

“Matt & I met right after he moved to Baltimore City. One of my best friends had just turned 21 and we wanted to find a place to go out. She had known Matt & his friends for quite some time and reconnected with his roommate. I got to meet Matt & Chris as Matt had just gotten back from the gym and gave us a tour of the house (and I knew I liked him immediately!) and then went to go get ready to go out. A little while later we took a cab (back when people still took cabs… :)) down to Canton and went to Nacho Mama’s! We all shared a Hubcap margarita at the bar. Matt and I were pretty engrossed with each other at that point — we talked and talked and learned a lot about each other. We even kissed in the cab that night on the way back to their place. 🙂 They invited us back down the next night and we went to Ale Mary’s and Bad Decisions and then Matt took me to the National Zoo in DC the next morning. And that was it. I think we both knew where we stood pretty quickly and hung out pretty much every weekend after that…”

Can we just stop for a second and have a moment with this GORGEOUS one-of-a-kind ring that Matt gave Lauren? I’ve never seen anything like it and can’t stop staring at it! A custom pear shaped yellow diamond?!

Living steps from Patterson Park and loving the walk along the Fells Point waterfront,  I can’t get enough of their perfect embraces and snuggly selves… everything about our night together was picture perfect!!

Their proposal story is SO sweet… but I also just love how real it starts out! How many of you have struggled with “…relaxing vacation or adventure trip?!”

“We have always struggled a bit with our travel preferences — the best way I can describe it is that I prefer “vacations” where Matt prefers “trips”. After a long few weeks of “trips” with our friends, we had a long conversation about my need for a vacation from our trips… He immediately got to work planning a weekend a few months later in Hudson, NY. A place where he promised that there was so little to do that even he could not turn the vacation into a trip. We stayed in a cute AirBnB, explored the town a little the first day and went to a nice meal. The next day we did some more exploring and then went back to the house to relax and then shower and get ready for dinner. I was sitting on the bed reading and he suddenly came in and let me know that he had decided we REALLY needed to go check this place a few miles away out. And that we HAD to go that evening before dinner. So, begrudgingly, I pulled my hair up in a messy bun, threw on a giant sweatshirt and converse and hopped into the car. We got to Olana (a gorgeous house designed and decorated by Frederic Church with beautiful details all over it, overlooking the Hudson River) and walked around a bit, the house was already closed, so I was honestly a bit annoyed that we were there… we made our way through the yard and sat down on a bench looking back up at the house, it was really nice because no one else was around since the house had closed for the day. And that’s when he did it. 🙂 It was lovely — and I was super appreciative that he knows me well enough to have found such a peaceful quiet spot for it! I later learned that while I was hosting my best friend’s bachelorette party in Ocean City a few weekends earlier, he had recruited his brother to drive all the way to Hudson with him, check out Olana, to make sure he liked it and had a plan and grabbed lunch and drove all of the way home!! He hadn’t told anyone besides his brother, so it was fun making the calls and actually surprising everyone with the news.”

I’m so humbled when we get to meet the friends and family of our past #urpcouples that then become current clients and friends of ours! I first met Kathryn while Annie + Chris were planning their wedding last April (see their beautiful early spring wedding here!); she’s Chris’ beautiful younger sister and I still remember the text Annie sent me when Kathryn officially got engaged. I felt so connected to this family already and was so full of excitement and joy for them!

I love it when clients have an idea of a location or a specific look in mind that allows our time together to be that much more meaningful and comfortable! I’m always happy to suggest locations, but when Kathryn mentioned how much they love being outdoors together we tossed around a few different ideas and after landing on Fells Point near the building “with the blue shutters on the water” (aka Henderson’s Wharf), I knew we were going to have a BLAST… it’s my favorite spot and with their chemistry and passion for bringing their pup Cooper on all of their adventures (YAY for bringing pups to photoshoots – YES, PLEASE!!!), magic was bound to happen. 🙂

I loved hearing their story, in their own words… Casey, I’m pretty sure you win the award for best hydration technician there ever was and ever will be! 😉

“We first met in our high school phys ed class. We started hanging out at school and Casey became the girls lacrosse manager, or hydration technician, as he liked to call it :).

During lacrosse season, Kathryn went down with an injury (torn ACL) and Casey was there throughout the entire process of surgery and rehab and he always had the right words to say. We “officially” began dating on May 31st, 2009, when we went out to Qdoba, knee immobilizer and all, and later got a movie from Blockbuster.”

And now, the proposal…
(with one of the most beautiful solitaire rings I’ve ever seen, btw!!)

“On February 17th, 2017, Casey set up a dinner reservation at Pairings Bistro, where we enjoyed a nice dinner and drinks. When the check came, Casey could not add the tip to save his life, which later makes sense. He told me we had to go back to his parents house to pick up flowers that were delivered there for Valentine’s Day for me. When we arrived, Cooper met me at the door, which I was surprised by because he should have been at my parent’s house. As we walk in the door, I realized my mom and dad were both there as well. I was now beginning to think this could be the proposal, but then kept saying in my head it couldn’t be, because my Mom didn’t make me get my nails done. A few moments later, Casey grabbed my hand and walked me to the backyard which was set up with tea lights, rose petals and a full bouquet of roses all the way down the path to the fire pit that was lit. At this point, he got down on one knee, with our closest family, and asked me to marry him. We celebrated that evening with our parents and siblings with cake and champagne.”

I’m crazy excited for you both (and your families!) and can not wait to celebrate with you at Wyndridge Farm this September (6 months from this Thursday… not that I’m counting down or anything)! Your love for craft breweries, spending time outdoors, being the best dog parents and celebrating with family is such a part of your everyday life that it should absolutely all be a part of your wedding day!

Here’s to your best year yet… and we know the sunset will be even more incredible that night as you get used to your new titles of Mr. + Mrs!!! 😉

6 reasons why you should do an engagement session!

As we head into engagement season (yes, it’s a thing – this Vogue article made me laugh!), I wanted to share my top 5 reasons why engagement sessions are so valuable… since after being in this industry for awhile, I’ve answered all of the questions below and you might be wondering the same thing!

  • “Do we really need an engagement session? We already have our save the dates designed so we don’t need them for that.”
  • “We were going to have Uncle John/my best friend/my brother take them because they can’t wait to try out the new camera they just got and have taken a few photos of us before…”
  • “We have a really tight budget. Can we eliminate them from our wedding package to save money?”
  • “My fiance really isn’t going to be into it…”
  • “I’d rather have my teeth cleaned than stand and pose in front of the camera with a stranger.”

Hold on, I NEED TO STOP THIS LIST RIGHT THERE and say this:
I can promise you by the end of our session I’ll have you laughing, snuggling up and holding hands more naturally than you ever thought possible. Strangers will be smiling at you (if we’re in a more public place) and I will be cheering you on as you feel silly and laugh yet look like you belong on the cover of the magazine that would exist if GQ and Vogue merged into one fancypants stylish publication for BOTH of you.

I love engagement sessions with my couples!! I think they are so valuable to our entire experience together that they are complimentary in all of Urban Row Photography’s wedding packages. My goal is to always give you the most enjoyable experience and professional coverage for your wedding day and I don’t want to give you anything less than my best!

  1. Our time together during an engagement session functions like a rehearsal for your wedding portraits!

That’s right… the rehearsal for your wedding day *photos* happens months in advance of the actual rehearsal dinner fun. 😉 The connection we make helps me learn the quirks and unique gestures that you and your fiance have together; it helps both of you become comfortable around me and in front of the camera. This helps me capture you both in the most natural, flattering and authentic poses at both the session as well as your big day!

Helpful hint: if you really want it to feel like a true dry run, try coordinating your session with your hair and makeup trials; it will allow you the chance to see how they show up in photos and BONUS… you’ll feel extra glamorous and confident! 🙂

  2. The timing for an engagement session is generally early on in the process when stress levels are low and excitement is high. (#whycanteverydaybelikethat?)

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the wedding day details, planning, guest count decisions, etc, that another reason I enjoy engagement sessions is that it’s time for you and your love to be in the moment with each other with no additional stress of the next planning deadline to occur or finding time to make sure you are in touch with Aunt Martha from California.  It’s just you two in a place that’s full of meaning to you!

Helpful hint: the location of your session is next in importance to taking engagement photos in the first place!! This is where the fun begins! Are you envisioning an urban look to your photos? Maybe downtown along the waterfront?

What about exploring a historic cobblestoned street?

Or a more natural garden aesthetic?

    Maybe a local flower farm?

golden, glowing love on a farm

    Or a cozy, woodland look?

    rainy day engagement

rainy days can be just as gorgeous!

Or a timeless and classic historic mansion?

a timeless and classic engagement at Hampton Mansion

  3. This moment in time is unlike one that will ever happen again. It’s the beginning of your family’s love story.

Think about it; your life’s path has now been forever altered in the best way possible. You deserve to to have gorgeous, timeless photos to share and show to your loved ones years from now. Sharing how you both looked, felt and even what you wore when you officially began your journey together is so important. It’s not a phase or a season you’ll ever get back and I’m pretty sure your kids will love looking through your engagement photos while hearing you tell your version of the proposal story. Heck, I’ve heard my parents story 17 times but I’ve yet to see a photo from that period in their lives… and I so wish I could!

  4. Bringing your pet to the wedding may not be feasible. So furry friends are welcome at your engagement shoot and actually… ENCOURAGED!

Your little fur-baby plays such a large part in your life and they are generally absent on your big day for logistical reasons (although I’d LOVE it if they were there! Who is planning to have their pet included in their wedding day and/or ceremony!? Let’s TALK!!).  So, I love when my couples include some time during their engagement photos to involve their pets. Let’s be honest, when was the last time all 3 of you got behind the camera together? Those first ‘family’ photos become just as important a keepsake as your wedding ones!

    pups always steal the show!

Helpful hint: feel free to bring Max with you but since dogs aren’t able to understand all the benefits of a 60-90 minute engagement shoot, plan to have a family member or friend available to hand them off to once we’ve taken some key shots. 😉

  5. My FAVORITE compliments following engagement sessions are from the grooms telling me how they weren’t expecting to have so much fun during the shoot!

I sometimes receive comments from my brides that the groom-to-be is a little bashful or uncomfortable in front of the camera.  Well, this is obviously a GREAT reason to have the session. Practice makes perfect, right? It’s a wonderful test run in front of the camera looking into each others eyes and forgetting about everything else.  My job is to make this easy for you and capture those easily forgotten candid glances, the nose wrinkles when he makes you laugh and then cracks up himself…

a Univ. of Maryland College Park engagement

  6. Focused time with your bling. Since your fiancé spent a ton of time (and $$$) on it!

Everyone asks to see the ring once you’re engaged and I love taking a few moments to showcase your new sparkly bits! New, antique, unique, I love seeing them all and learning more about your proposal story and why that specific ring was chosen by your fiancé.

    gold solitaire engagement ring

These are just a few reasons why I not only enjoy capturing your love during the time you’re an engaged couple, but also why I feel it is so, so important.  Just like our first meeting, the engagement session is a powerful way for our relationship to grow as we gear up for your wedding.  We spend so much time together on your wedding day, it’s almost fitting that we have a fun photo ‘date’ before the big day!

I always love when couples with a deep connection to Baltimore, return here to get married. It reminds me of our love story a bit: planning a September wedding from afar, where the main goal is for everyone to have fun!!

Mary Pat is originally from Baltimore and still has a large amount of extended family in the area. These lovebirds currently live in Boston, so when I found out they’re working with Courtney of Moore & Company Event Stylists to help execute their wedding day vision, I knew this was going to be not only a fun wedding for their guests, but a rewarding and amazing experience to be a part of as their wedding photographer!cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0005
With a love of being outdoors, Mary Pat and Jonathan’s Cylburn Arboretum engagement session was such a gorgeous location to capture their joy and adorable love! Not to mention, how amazing is Mary Pat’s coral dress?! It was the perfect pop of vibrant color among all of the light pink crepe myrtles and greenery.cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0003cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0012cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0006
Cylburn’s historic mansion is one of my favorite pieces of architecture in Charm City; both elegant and approachable, it is surrounded by the most colorful and lush gardens.cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0011cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0007cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0001cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0008cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0009cylburn-arboretum-baltimore-engagement_0002I had the best time getting to know you both a bit more and love that you were such troopers as we strolled around the arboretum on one of the hottest nights of the summer! So much of Liz and Steven’s love story can be found in Maryland even though they currently live in Atlanta; having attended high school and college together, their love has steadily grown over the years. It was an absolute joy to explore the campus while hearing all about their memories as students. These sweethearts are University of Maryland Terp fans through and through!!

How cute are they?! Golden locks and glowing laughs while enjoying a perfect summer night on your alma mater’s turf… pretty sure it doesn’t get much better than this!

We found our way up to their season ticket seats within the stadium and took a few minutes to revel in the fact that we had the stadium all to ourselves – it was pretty incredible!!

It was so much fun to see them having fun on their home turf, where it all began…

The light at the stadium was absolutely gorgeous, but it was time to explore the rest of campus!

I was in awe of all of the gorgeous spots we found together – and every time, these two got cuter and cuter with their expressions!

We ended at the M… for Maryland or Marriage, I’ll let you decide. 😉

I adored our time together and am so looking forward to your wedding in Baltimore next June! Cheers, lovebirds!

caren + jan | mt vernon baltimore | engagement session

I spent a perfect early summer evening with Caren + Jan in Mt. Vernon recently and it was so much fun to explore this historic Baltimore neighborhood together through their eyes! Having lived in the heart of Mt. Vernon for over 3 years, the neighborhood’s sophisticated yet classic feel was such a compliment to their relationship!

Mt. Vernon holds a special place in my heart since it was the first neighborhood I ever lived in when I moved to Baltimore! 🙂 It’s home to the original Washington Monument, and some of the most exquisite architecture, churches, textured walls and ornate fences you’ve ever seen.

The Belvedere Hotel’s Owl Bar holds tons of sentimental memories of their early relationship, so naturally we had to capture golden hour magic under the iconic sign!

I absolutely love how radiant the two of them are together! Their smiles are literally contagious. 🙂

Caren and Jan, thank you for spending the evening with me among the trees and humoring me with my “wait, let’s take just one more here!” (famous last words) approach! You guys rocked it!! Can’t wait for your November wedding!

xo, Naomi
